Friends of Photography

Friends of Photography [10] is a monthly appearance of someone from my world of photography. People that have a photostream that I like, or that I frequently interact with or have somehow a distinct style. The title of this post was inspired on a project of a friend from photography. This 'idea' came into my mind because lately I find myself wanting to share more than just my photos. Who knows if you could be the next one represented here! I bring to you 2 photos from the photographer, my words about the author and a special text made by each month guest. I hope you enjoy this project as much as I.

[En] Ricardo Porto | Ricardo is one more photography lover who shares that same passion and without pretension. I met him through G+ but I only had the curiosity of checking his blog long after. Looking to the portraits that he makes of people walking on Porto streets I asked myself what is to approach someone and ask permission for a photo. That is not for all. So I invited him to be a part of this project and by doing that I had the opportunity to see the face behind the blog. He thinks that having a face associated to a blog can lead to distractions and takes all the fun. Porto street shooting is a photoblog that has much of Ricardo’s personality, that can reach all parts of the world because is written in english and also because shows faces and stories of anonymous people that for some minutes became non anonymous. This search, that isn’t really a search, occurs very randomly along the streets as he states. Besides “after people give their permission, they accept almost everything”. You can read the text bellow made by Ricardo.

[En] My interest about photography comes since the 90’s when I bought a camera. For some time, a very long time actually, the main utility was for photographing the family, friends, trips, etc., although already at the time I prefered to document the little things of the daily over the major moments. I still have arquived some thousands of analog photos of that time.

Later, in 2005, I started with digital cameras, for the same kind of porpose, and only in 2010 felt like starting a photoblog and take photos of Porto streets.

Being this the theme of the blog, street photography, but with no specific goals it lead me to another kind which I don’t really now – portraits of anonymous people that capture my attention for some particullary reason.

Real street photography has two approaches – one more classic in terms of composition, shadows games, etc., and another more ‘modern’ of ‘candid’ portraits. For the 1st one I don’t have much talent although well done it can be very interesting, anyway most of the times it can be very boring to me. About the second it can end most of the times badly. Who wants to be caught in situations that are not so flattering at all?

Therefore, since I canot be invisible to catch ‘the moment’ I prefer to ask if the person allows to be photographed. Sometimes it works well, others not so well, but this is the way I do it.

I go alone and often with the same lens, of 40mm (equi.) to let some space for Porto city in the frame. My camera, bought in 2011, is a Panasonic GF2 with a fixed lens of 20mm, f1.7. I also take with me a spare batery, a graycard and a lenspen. I use Lightroom.

I usually take the shots during the weekend. On my way I don't have any defined destiny, it depends of the traffic lights, but it happens in the down town of Porto, very randomly.

Nevertheless I have some rules that I try to follow about the situations I photograph, yet some exceptions may happen.
