Friends of Photography

Friends of Photography [9] is a monthly appearance of someone from my world of photography. People that have a photostream that I like, or that I frequently interact with or have somehow a distinct style. The title of this post was inspired on a project of a friend from photography. This 'idea' came into my mind because lately I find myself wanting to share more than just my photos. Who knows if you could be the next one represented here! I bring to you 2 photos from the photographer, my words about the author and a special text made by each month guest. I hope you enjoy this project as much as I.

[Pt] Ruben Botelho | De volta com um fotógrafo profissional que é produto nacional e que partilho com bastante gosto. Eu vejo o Ruben como uma pessoa altamente criativa e um homens das artes. As primeiras fotos que vi do Ruben transmitiram-me o seguinte: contraste, p&b, ângulos, criatividade, texturas, urbex. Com o tempo vi que é capaz de apresentar sempre mais além e fruto de muita imaginação, dedicação e algum humor. É assim detentor de um estilo inconfundível. [En] Ruben Botelho | Back with a professional photographer, a portuguese one that I share with great satisfaction. I see Ruben as a person who is very creative and a man of the arts. The first photos I saw from his work I describe them with the following words: contrast, b&w, angles, creativity, textures, urbex. With time I realise that he is capable of presenting more and more which is a result of his imagination, dedication and some humour. He has a unique and remarkable style. [Pt] Quando é que escolheste a fotografia como profissão e o que te levou a tal?

A fotografia já vinha comigo desde muito cedo, antes usava-a para fotografar paisagens e anatomia, poses para desenhar os meus heróis de banda desenhada, na altura usava uma SLR analógica do meu pai, e conseguia sempre usar 5 ou 6 fotos do rolo das férias, ou das festas de aniversário, para mim. Essa experiência foi um factor decisivo mais tarde, quando entrei para o liceu queria seguir algo a ver com design ou pintura, mas durante a estadia na escola, essa ambição passou por escultor, cartoonista, paisagista, e até tatuador, mas em todas elas usei a fotografia, quer para guardar fotos das peças feitas, quer para fazer o making off da construção das mesmas.

Foi no 11º ano (2007), que finalmente, tive uma epifania, quando as primeiras digitais como deve ser começaram a aparecer, e eu já podia tirar fotos sem ter de esperar pela revelação, foi quase como que um despertar para um novo medium, que até então era caro, e pouco prático, mas com resultados bastante bons, principalmente no preto e branco, e foi isso que me fez começar a fotografar. A ideia de vir a ser fotógrafo, ou algo relacionado com a fotografia veio logo a seguir, e ficou até então.

Que tipo de trabalhos fotográficos te dá mais gozo realizar?

Os mais criativos, em que, se for o caso, o cliente me dê liberdade artística para criar à minha maneira, e tempo, gosto de trabalhar com tempo, (se bem que muitas vezes é impossível ) para afinar todos os pormenores o melhor que posso.

Gosto muito de fazer trabalhos relacionados com urbex e locais abandonados, gosto de sessão com modelos, de autor, assim como foto mais abstrata, gosto muito do preto e branco, seja em analógico ou em digital, sempre que posso fazer um trabalho a preto e branco fico sempre entusiasmado. Edição e montagem tambem é algo que gosto muito, gosto particularmente de criar situações e até cenários completos, que vão além da foto tradicional, gosto de apimentar as fotos, e editar é sempre mais em conta que produzir o evento real, mas sempre que possível ter o real, eu prefiro o real.

Gosto também de usar mix media, misturar vários elementos numa só peça, acho que cria um dinamismo mais forte, e torna a obra mais complexa e agradável de olhar.

O que deve transmitir uma fotografia, na tua opinião?

Essa pergunta é difícil de responder. Penso que para cada situação e cada foto ou tema que a foto represente, tem uma maneira de sentir própria, agora há sempre traços gerais que acho que são válidos a todas as fotos, o impacto que causa é diferente claro, mas todas as fotos causam um certo tipo de impacto.

A fotografia é a ilustração do real, e com isso em mente, penso que não é muito difícil viajarmos para locais que nunca visitámos ou recordarmos certas memórias do passado, ou aproximar pessoas no presente, a fotografia tem esse poder, por não ser algo inventado, mesmo quando é manipulação se a imagem real, a fonte, usada é fotográfica, o impacto esta lá, por vermos o mundo maioritariamente em imagens, acho que as fotos são quase como fragmentos de memória visual, que podemos partilhar com outros, e é aí que penso que a fotografia é muito forte.

Resumindo a fotografia tem de me fazer sentir alguma coisa, seja ela o que for, é claro que quanto mais nos aproximarmos do sentimento entendido pelo autor, melhor deve ser a foto.

[En] When did you choose photography as a job, what drive you to work as a photographer?

Photography is with me for some time, back then I used to photograph landscapes, anatomy and poses to draw my favorite comic heroes, using an analogic SLR from my father, and manage to take 5 to 6 photos to myself from the film of the vacations or birthday parties. This experience was a decisive factor later, when I went to high school I was wanting to pursuit something like design or painting, but during this period, this ambition changed to sculptor, cartoon guy, landscaper, and even a tattooist, still I kept using photography of my artistic work, or to plan the making off of artistic pieces.

Later in high school (2007), finally, I had an epiphany, when the first and good digital cameras started to appear, which allowed me to take pictures without the need of waiting for the development of the film (it was like a awakening to a new medium) somewhat expensive, not practical, nevertheless with great results, especially with black and white, and that was what made me start photographing. The idea of becoming photographer, or something related to photography came right after, and stayed until now.

What type of photographic work gives you more pleasure to do?

The ones that are more creative, which the client gives me the liberty to create my own way, and time, I like to work with time (sometimes it’s impossible) to refine all the details the best I can.

I like to do urbex photos and abandoned places, also shoting with models, author work, abstract photos, black and white, analogic or digital, each time I have to work with black and white I get very excited. Edition and photomontage is also one thing I like, to being able to create situations and complete scenarios, that go beyond the traditional photo, I like to spice up the photos, and to edit is always more cheap than materializing a real situation, but having the real situation every time that is possible, because I prefer the real one.

I also like to use mix media, to mix several elements in one peace, I think that creates a stronger dynamism, and makes the work more complex and enjoyable to look.

What should a photo transmit, in your opinion?

That’s a hard question to answer. I believe that for each photo and situation or theme that the photo pretends to represent, has a unique way of feeling, but there’s always some general aspects that are valid to every pictures, the impact that they cause is different obviously, but every photo causes a certain kind of impact.

Photography is the illustration of the real, that in mind, I think is not difficult to travel to places that we never went or reminding some memories of the past, or approaching people in the present, photography has that power, because is something that is not invented, even when is a manipulation, if the real image, the source used, is photographic, the impact is there, because we see the world mainly through images, I believe that photos are almost like fragments of visual memory, that we can share with others, and in this point I think photography is very strong.

To complete, photography has to make me feel something, whatever may be, of course, the nearest we are from the feelings desired by the author, the better the photo is.
