Friends of Photography

Friends of Photography [8] is a appearance of someone from my world of photography. People that have a photostream that I like, or that I frequently interact with or have somehow a distinct style. The title of this post was inspired on a project of a friend from photography. This 'idea' came into my mind because lately I find myself wanting to share more than just my photos. Who knows if you could be the next one represented here! I bring to you 2 photos from the photographer, my words about the author and a special text made by each month guest. I hope you enjoy this project as much as I.

Hugo Pinho | I have in my hands an article about Hugo but I will break the rules and just write what is in my head. I don't recall how I started to follow this friend or even the talks we already had. Also don't know if I started to follow his shots after or before seeing the article about him in portuguese's magazine zOOm. Anyway it's like I already know him for a long time! I follow his photos very closely and since the beginning I fell in love by the pictures he is making in Angola. I was delaying so that this set would get bigger, the quality is assured, but now is possible to see more stories and faces. To be able to make this kind of photography is not for everybody, Hugo has done a great job which demonstrates the special human being that he must be. If not, how could he ever connect in such way with the situations and people that are in the other side of the lens? The ones that follow and see Hugo's work know the richness and experiences behind these photos to just call documental or ethnographic. Another detail I can add about him is that after a while photographing in digital format he started to use analog. [PT] Tenho nas minhas mãos um artigo que fala sobre o Hugo mas vou quebrar as regras e escrever apenas o que me vai na alma. Não me lembro como comecei a seguir este amigo nem me lembro bem de conversas que já tivemos. Não sei se já o seguia no flickr antes ou depois de ver o artigo sobre ele na revista zOOm. Seja como for é como se já o conhecesse à muito tempo! Sigo as suas fotos muito atentamente e desde cedo me apaixonei pelas fotografias que tem feito por Angola. Andava a aguardar que este álbum ficasse maior, pois embora a qualidade seja garantida, agora é possível ver mais histórias e rostos. Conseguir fazer este tipo de fotografia não é para qualquer um, o Hugo na minha opinião tem-se saído muito bem o que demonstra o ser extraordinário que deve ser. Se não o fosse, como poderia conectar-se desta forma às pessoas e situações que estão do outro lado da objectiva? Quem vê as suas fotos e o segue sabe bem a riqueza e as vivências por detrás das mesmas para apenas as classificar como documentais ou etnográficas. Outro pormenor que também posso desde já partilhar é que depois de alguns anos fotografando em formato digital dedicou-se ao analógico. A fim de saber mais sobre isto vale mesmo a pena descobrir a Fotografia feita pelo Hugo.

Precisely 20 years ago, in 1993, I had my first camera. A gorgeous Pentax K1000 that still works today. Thus began my passion for Photography! However, only in the last 3 years started photographing more frequently, particularly in the last year since I came to work in Angola. 

Far from family and friends, Photography fills my free time. In fact, the camera is always with me, wherever I go. You never know when it provides the opportunity to photograph. 

I tend to shoot people. And here, in a very natural way I make contact with them, talk to them, play, laugh. And in the end they turn out to ask me to photograph them! 

Generally I thank by offering the photos in 10x15cm to the people who kindly agreed to be photographed. The reactions are the most rewarding!

[PT] Há precisamente 20 anos atrás, em 1993, tive a minha primeira máquina fotográfica. Uma belíssima Pentax K1000 que ainda hoje funciona. Assim começou o bichinho da Fotografia! Contudo, só nos últimos 3 anos comecei a fotografrar de uma forma mais frequente, em particular neste último ano desde que vim trabalhar para Angola. 

Longe da família e dos amigos, a Fotografia preenche os tempos livres. Na verdade, a máquina fotográfica anda sempre comigo, para onde quer que vá. Nunca se sabe quando se proporciona a ocasião para fotografar. 

Tenho tendência para fotografar pessoas. E aqui, de uma forma natural se faz contacto com elas, conversa-se, brinca-se, ri-se. E no final acabam por me pedir para fotografar! 

Geralmente retribuo a simpatia mandando fazer as fotos em 10x15cm e oferecendo às pessoas que gentilmente aceitaram ser fotografadas. As reacções são o mais gratificante!
