Friends of Photography

Friends of Photography [7] is a monthly appearance of someone from my world of photography. People that have a photostream that I like, or that I frequently interact with or have somehow a distinct style. The title of this post was inspired on a project of a friend from photography. This 'idea' came into my mind because lately I find myself wanting to share more than just my photos. Who knows if you could be the next one represented here! I bring to you 2 photos from the photographer, my words about the author and a special text made by each month guest. I hope you enjoy this project as much as I.

Ás de Copas | É este o nome pelo qual conheço o convidado desde mês que mais abaixo se vai apresentar melhor. Comecei a seguir este "amante" da fotografia porque algo nas suas fotos me cativou, não sei muito bem explicar, apenas sei que gosto e que se distingue de uma forma muito própria. As fotografias que mais gosto são as que ele traz de viagem e que mostram outras gentes e outras paragens. Essas mesma fotografias trazem emoções, sabor e cor quando poderiam ser meramente snapshots de viagem. Mas não são! O outro tipo de fotografia que partilha e que eu particularmente gosto são as de paisagens. De um modo geral são simples e por vezes minimalistas, e mais uma vez transmitindo algo mais para além daquilo que a câmera capta. A escolha deste mês é assim simples, diferente e descontraída. Já agora, o Ás de Copas tem um blog, que está "adormecido", mas que foi eleito o melhor blog de fotografia de Língua Portuguesa de 2011.

[En] Ás de Copas | This is the name by which I know this month guest and below he is going to introduce himself very well. I started to follow this photography "lover"  because there were something in his pictures that has captivate me, don´t know how to explain it, I just know that I like it and that he marks his presence in his very own way. The shots I like more are the ones that he brings from his trips and which show other people e other places. These same shots bring emotions, taste and colour when they could had be merely travel snapshots. But they are not! Other kind of photos that he shares and I like are of landscapes. Generally they are simple and somewhat minimal, and once again communicating something more in addition to what the camera captures. This month choice is simple, different and relaxed. By the way, Ás de Copas has a blog, although hibernating now, that was voted as the best photography blog of Portuguese Language in 2011.

Primeiro os rótulos: José Marques, também conhecido por esses lugares da fotografia como Ás de Copas, tenho 39 anos, natural da Nazaré mas adoptado por Coimbra, gestor de profissão e fotógrafo por romance. Posto isto, as partes chatas, resta-me falar da fotografia. 

Há dois tipos de fotos que me enchem o goto: rua e viagem! E embora muito similares acabo, eu, por torná-las completamente diferentes. 

Um dia Arnaldo Jabor escreveu, mais tarde Rita Lee cantou, que amor e sexo são coisas tão parecidas que só podem ser diferentes. Fazer fotografia de rua é fazer amor. E fotografia de viagem só pode ser sexo. 

Na rua somos mentais, olhamos, estudamos, preparamos, quase como quem prepara um banho de espuma. Sem pressas, sabendo que o momento vai chegar. E se não chegar, voltamos lá uma e outra vez, até que a temperatura da água esteja no ponto e a espuma divinalmente sedosa no toque da pele. 

Em viagem somos vulcões porque o momento é efémero, porque tudo é intenso, porque sente-se na pele. É uma corrida. É um chegar e logo ter de partir em busca de outro lugar. E fotografar é, tal como o sexo, vontade. É animal, é pouco mental. É o momento, é só o instante. 

Na rua temos fotos sérias, pensadas, alinhadas. Aprumadas. 

Da viagem sobra-nos fotos despenteadas, bronzeadas e relaxadas. 

Mas quando em viagem, num momento de puro êxtase conseguimos um momento de amor com a máquina e tudo o resto... Quando a foto despenteada, bronzeada e relaxada é também pensada e aprumada. É divina. É divinal. É sexo. É amor. Se possível for…

[En] First the labels: My name is José Marques, at some photo related places i’m also known as Ás de Copas, born in Nazaré but adopted by Coimbra. I work with business management and take photos for love. After this, the boring stuff, let’s talk about photography. 

My kind of photos: street and travel! And although with very similarities i find a way to make them very different. 

Arnaldo Jabor wrote once and, later, Rita Lee sang that love and sex are almost the same thing that they can only be different. Doing street photos is just like making love. And travel photos can only be sex. 

On the street we are mental, we look, study and prepare. Just like we made a bubble bath. No rush, because we know that the moment will arrive. And, if not, we come back later, again and again, until the water in the tub is perfect and the foam is like silk on the skin. 

When travelling we are like volcanoes because everything is ephemeral, everything is intense and you feel it in your skin. It’s a race. It’s arriving and almost departing at the same time, in search for another place. And making a photo, in this ambience is, like sex, a desire. It’s animal. It’s lust. It’s only you and the moment. Just an intense flash. 

On the street we are serious, thinkers, aligned. Upright ones. 

From travelling we are left with disheveled, tanned and relaxed photos. 

But, when in travel, if in one ecstasy moment we can make love with the camera and all that is around us… When a disheveled, tanned and relaxed photo is also some kind of upright and thought photo… oh!!! 

It’s divine. Amazing. Pure sex but it can also be a sweet kind of love. If possible…
